Gaming TV Mass Effect TV Writer Pushes Back on Ankler Report Claiming Amazon Is Rewriting the Show for Non-Gamers Alessio Palumbo • at EDT Add on Google Lead writer Daniel Casey says he never received any directive to rewrite the Mass Effect TV series for non-gamers, despite a recent report from the Ankler. Earlier this month, The Ankler published a report in which they mentioned that the Mass Effect TV series in development at Amazon Prime Video would have to be partially rewritten to accommodate "non-gaming audiences", as mandated by Amazon's new Head of Global TV, Peter Friedlander. The report added that Friedlander, who took over as Head of TV in October 2025, has apparently been taking an active role in approving script decisions across multiple Amazon Prime projects, with several being delayed as a result. Needless to say, this wasn't exactly thrilling news for fans of BioWare's beloved sci-fi gaming franchise. At least from the outside, it sounded like such changes could fundamentally impact the quality of adaptation by tinkering with its core, which is what made fans fall in love with Mass Effect in the first place. Thankfully, Mass Effect TV series writer and producer Daniel Casey denied those rumors in a Bluesky post: Related Story Meet the Full Companions Cast of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, Out Spring 2027So, I can’t talk about the specifics of what I’m writing (I’ve signed NDAs, etc) — but for whatever it’s worth, that article by the Ankler caught me off guard just as much as you. I don’t know where that “non-gaming audiences” quote came from or who said it, but at no point has that been said to me. Of course, it's still possible that the mandate exists but hasn't been communicated to the writers' team yet. However, it seems more likely that the original report might have been incorrect. After many years of rumors, Amazon secured a deal to adapt Mass Effect in November 2024. Right away, they announced Casey (known mainly for Fast & Furious 9 - The Fast Saga), and we later learned that Doug Jung (Star Trek: Beyond, Banshee) will be the showrunner. Moreover, the production team is the same that delivered the critically acclaimed Fallout adaptation. There's still no info on the cast. However, we do know the show will feature a brand-new canon story set after the events of the original trilogy.
