A cyber threat group linked to North Korea has refined its attack methods, combining AI-generated deepfakes, spoofed video conferencing, and automated malware deployment to infiltrate high-value targets. The campaign, attributed to UNC1069—a group active since 2018—exploits compromised accounts to distribute malicious Zoom links via calendar invites, tricking victims into interacting with a fabricated executive figure.
Once the target accepts the call, they encounter a deepfake impersonating a CEO from another cryptocurrency company. The fake executive claims to have technical difficulties and instructs the victim to run diagnostic commands. These commands, however, execute a chain of seven newly discovered malware families designed to establish backdoors and exfiltrate sensitive data.
The attack chain reveals a dual objective: immediate financial gain through cryptocurrency theft and long-term access to victim accounts for future social engineering campaigns. Google’s analysis indicates the group has used AI tools like Gemini to automate reconnaissance, craft convincing fraudulent instructions, and even simulate software updates to extract credentials.
How the Scam Unfolds

Other groups, such as BlueNoroff, have reportedly used AI models like GPT-4 to manipulate images and craft more persuasive phishing lures.
