Larian Dismisses AI-Generated Text in Game Development
In a recent and extensive Q&A session with fans, Larian Studios clarified its stance on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools within its game development process. While the studio is exploring certain applications like machine learning to optimize animation workflows, it has definitively ruled out the use of AI-generated text, whether as placeholder content or finalized dialogue.
The Quality Problem
The discussion arose in response to concerns about Larian's commitment to avoiding AI-generated assets. A user inquired specifically about the potential for AI to create placeholder text and whether even “good enough” AI output might find its way into a final game, potentially compromising Larian’s promise of asset originality. Writing director Adam Smith responded directly, stating that AI text generation is simply not viable for their needs.
The stance applies to writing as well,” Smith explained. “We don't have any text generation touching our dialogues, journal entries or other writing in Divinity.” He elaborated on the perceived shortcomings of AI-generated content, bluntly stating that even its best attempts scored a mere 3/10 – significantly below the quality of his own initial drafts. Smith added, with a touch of humor, that even his worst first drafts typically achieve a rating of at least 4/10, though he playfully suggested that studio head Swen Vincke might disagree.
The Human Touch in Writing
Smith emphasized the extensive human effort involved in crafting dialogue, highlighting the numerous revisions and iterations required to reach the desired quality. “From the initial stub to the line we record and ship, there are a great many eyes and hands involved in getting a dialogue right.” This underscores Larian’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of writing and storytelling within its games.
A Common Critique of AI Text
Smith's assessment aligns with widespread criticism of current AI text generation tools. Many users have observed a consistent “AI stink” – a tendency towards overly formal, smarmy, or repetitive language that detracts from the overall quality and authenticity of the writing. Often, correcting this artificial tone requires more effort than simply starting anew.
Other Development Updates
The Q&A session also provided insights into other aspects of Larian’s development process. Notably, the infamous armor system from Original Sin 2 will not be returning in future titles. Furthermore, the team is actively considering player save-scumming habits when designing gameplay mechanics for upcoming games, aiming to make failure a more engaging and interesting experience.
