The Drop store, a well-known destination for limited-edition hardware and custom keycaps, is set to shut down on March 31st. While the site will remain accessible for order history reviews, Corsair will assume full responsibility for retail operations moving forward.
Drop has been recognized for its innovative partnerships, from themed keyboards to exclusive keycap sets. However, with its closure, some of these collaborations may not continue under Corsair's management. For example, the Lord of the Rings-themed keyboard, which featured a miniature sword on the Enter key, is unlikely to return.
Customers have until PT on March 25th to place any remaining orders. Existing preorders and warranties will still be honored by Corsair, but Drop Rewards points will no longer be redeemable after that date.
Corsair acquired Drop in 2023 and integrated its staff without layoffs, a rare positive note in an industry increasingly marked by job cuts. While some products may transition to Corsair or other retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, collaborations with competitors—such as those with Sennheiser or Koss—are expected to fade.
The gaming hardware landscape has seen significant upheaval in recent years. Major tech companies, including Microsoft and Intel, have announced substantial layoffs, reflecting broader industry trends. Meanwhile, the games sector has also faced challenges, with notable studio closures and workforce reductions. Despite these setbacks, there remains hope for stability in both hardware and software development.
