In Helldivers 2, the Democracy Space Station (DSS) is more than a passive structure—it’s a dynamic force multiplier controlled by player votes. The station’s location determines which planet receives orbital support, such as airstrikes or heavy artillery, altering the balance of power in major campaigns. Yet despite its critical role, the voting process remains opaque to many players. Understanding how to influence its deployment could mean the difference between a stalled liberation or a decisive defense.
The DSS operates on a simple but strategic principle: donations from players fund its actions, while votes determine its destination. Each planet under siege or liberation can receive one of several tactical boosts, but only if the community directs the DSS there. The system relies on two key mechanics—donations and voting—and both are accessible through the Galactic War map.
How to Cast a Vote
Voting is straightforward once you locate the right interface. Players must
- Navigate to the Galactic War map while aboard their ship.
- Press B (keyboard) or Toggle View (controller) to open the map menu.
- Select the Location tab using E (keyboard) or the right bumper (controller).
This interface displays a live poll of active voting options, each tied to a specific planet. The most popular choice—based on real-time player input—wins, and the DSS relocates accordingly. The process is designed to be fluid, allowing players to shift strategy mid-campaign if conditions change.
What the DSS Brings to the Battlefield
The station’s influence isn’t abstract. When positioned over a planet, it unlocks one of three high-impact buffs, depending on community donations
- Eagle Storm: Deploys periodic airstrikes that disrupt enemy movements, particularly effective in defense campaigns where holding a position is critical.
- Orbital Blockade: Prevents enemy spawns on the planet entirely, while also activating the Hellpod Space Optimization Booster—a passive upgrade that enhances mission efficiency.
- Heavy Ordnance Distribution: Grants access to the Orbital 380mm HE Barrage, a devastating stratagem that accelerates liberation efforts by devastating enemy strongholds.
These abilities aren’t just cosmetic—they directly alter mission difficulty and success rates. For example, an Orbital Blockade on a key defense planet can turn the tide against overwhelming bot or Illuminate forces, while Heavy Ordnance can shave hours off a liberation campaign by decimating entrenched enemies.
Strategic Voting in Practice
Voting isn’t random; it’s a tactical decision. Players should consider the current Major Order objectives. If the community is focused on liberating a planet like Aurora Bay, directing the DSS there with Heavy Ordnance could expedite progress. Conversely, if Merak is a critical defense hub—such as in recent Dispatch missions—keeping the DSS stationed there with an Orbital Blockade ensures no enemy reinforcements can spawn.
Live polls often reflect the most pressing needs. During a ‘Vote to raze Merak’ push, for instance, players might prioritize moving the DSS to Aurora Bay if the immediate goal is to secure a new front. However, if Merak remains the primary beachhead for an upcoming assault, retaining the DSS there with defensive buffs could be more strategic.
The system rewards coordination. Players who understand how to leverage the DSS’s capabilities—not just through donations but through informed voting—gain a measurable advantage in the war against the Swarm.
