Few video game characters have endured as long or as fiercely as Kratos. The Spartan warrior’s journey from vengeful antihero to family man has spanned three decades, but the original trilogy—set in ancient Greece—remains one of the most beloved entries in the series. Now, Sony’s Santa Monica Studio is giving those games a complete overhaul, transforming them from PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 exclusives into what appears to be a high-definition, modernized remake.

The announcement came during Sony’s recent PlayStation State of Play event, where the studio confirmed the project’s existence without revealing visuals or gameplay. The remake is still in early development, but the confirmation marks the first time Sony has acknowledged a full reimagining of the original trilogy, rather than just a remastered version.

For PC gamers, the news raises an important question: Will this remake follow the rest of the God of War* series onto Steam? The franchise has seen a shift in recent years, with God of War (2018) and Ragnarök arriving on PC, alongside Sony’s broader push into multiplatform releases. The studio’s decision to expand beyond consoles has already generated over two billion dollars in revenue, making it unlikely they’d exclude PC from a remake of such cultural significance. However, no official confirmation exists yet.

In addition to the remake, Sony also unveiled God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new sidescrolling action game set in the same universe. Released today on PS5, the game features TC Carson—who originally voiced Kratos in the first three games—returning as the adult Spartan. While Sons of Sparta* is currently PlayStation-exclusive, its style and setting hint at a potential future PC release, following a pattern seen with other Sony titles.

The remake’s development stage means no details on release windows or platform support are available. However, given the trilogy’s enduring legacy and Sony’s evolving multiplatform strategy, PC players may soon have another chance to experience Kratos’ earliest battles in a new light.
